Cherry Chevapravatdumrong was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. When she was young, her parents forbade her from watching television until she discovered Saturday Night Live in During the summers, Cherry worked at law firms, and during the winter breaks, she waited tables at her parents' restaurant, Lotus Thai. Having an interest in writing from an early age, she kept a diary in third grade, was the school newspaper's editor, and wrote for the literary magazine.
She also took standard AP classes and played the violin. Because of parental pressure, she majored in psychology at Yale and received a law degree from New York University Law School. Despite majoring in psychology, she was more interested in creative writing. So she enrolled in several writing courses.
